The Girls in ICT Day 2021 will introduce a lot of significant changes.
Firstly, ITSSI President Alice Aote’e announced that 3 provinces will now join the celebrations. Western, Malaita and Makira will be joining the virtual event on Thursday 6th May.
Originally slated for April, the event was postponed due to the late arrival of robotic kits that will be used during the celebration.
ITSSI President elect Ms Alice Alisae Aote’e pledged her executive’s commitment to developing programs and activities around the Strategic Plan 2020-23 adopted at the society’s AGM held on March 11 2021.
Ms Aote’e was elected as president from a field of 3 candidates which was attended by members at the Solomon Islands Government ICT Service conference center as well as virtually online.
Ms Aote’e succeeds Marlon Houkarawa who served for 8 years at the helm of the society.
Approximately 50 attendees came to our “Information Night” and 18 attended via Zoom from Australia, Switzerland and Honiara.
The event was organized to share information about the society as well as grow the society’s membership.
ITSSI has elected a new executive to lead the society for the next three years. The interim committee called for a Special General Meeting specifically to elect the executive. The elections were hosted at the Ministry of Labour and Commerce conference room on February 15th 2018 and was chaired by interim president Marlon Houkarawa. About 20 members of the society turned up for the meeting where the constitution was adopted and elections held immediately after.
On 27th September 2018, the Information Technology Society Solomon Islands was invited at the launch of the Australia - Solomon Islands Technology for Development Challenge. The challenge was launched by the Australian Ambassador for Cyber Affairs, Dr Tobias Feakin.
ITSSI collaborated with 2 government ministries and the telecommunications commission to organize a series of talks at different educational institutions in Honiara today to raise awareness about technology. These talks were organized as part of our local efforts to celebrate the 50th anniversary of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD).
The Asia Pacific Network Information Center (APNIC) followed an intensive but exciting training on IPv6 routing with a second training focused on Network Security from 16-20 November 2020.
Conducted online with trainers David Phelan and Muhammad Yasir, the Network Security training focused on threats and security for personal and corporate computer networks.
Stories from Solomon Islands as told through a collection of short videos from Women in IT Solomon Islands (WITSI), Solomon Islands National University (SINU) and Pacifiki HR was well received at the Australian Web Adaptability Initiative (OZeWAI) online conference.
The Australian Accessibility Conference is the annual conference of the OzeWAI members.
This year due to the COVID19 restrictive measures, the conference was held online from 9-11 December.
The Information Society Solomon Islands (ITSSI) has witnessed considerable debate surrounding the comments made by the Chairman of Solomon Islands Independent Commission Against Corruption, Sir Frank Kabui.
In his comments, Sir Kabui spoke about two same computers being sold at SBD12,000 and SBD5,000 – the latter he personally bought at a shop in Honiara. It was an example of what he suggests as the burden of corruption on businesses and individuals in Solomon Islands.
Prime Minister Hon Manasseh Sogavare has launched the Information Technology Society of Solomon Islands (ITSSI) today, saying the establishment of the organisation provides an excellent opportunity for the Government to obtain its professional views on the draft National Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Policy.
